My most memorable moment from the German occupation
On 15 September, gendarmes surrounded our village and conducted a search. As a little boy, I wanted to know why they came and whom they were going to arrest. They stopped at our neighbor’s house and conducted a search. They told the owner to get dressed and sent me to call his wife. I was six years old at the time and didn’t understand whom they wanted to see. I brought someone else. Enraged, the gendarmes wanted to whip me, and one of them pointed his gun at me. My mom began to cry and begged them to have mercy on a child, so they calmed down and left. I was so scared that I will never forget that moment.
