Warsaw, 14 May 1946. Examining Judge Halina Wereńko, delegated to the Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes, interviewed the person named below as a witness. Having advised the witness of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the significance of the oath, the judge took an oath therefrom, following which the witness testified as follows:

During the Warsaw Uprising I was – and continue to be – a monastic priest at the Christ King Church at Skaryszewska Street 12.
On 21 August 1944 Wehrmacht soldiers surrounded the area of the Eastern Railway Station and proceeded to evict all the residents from their homes, ordering only the caretakers to remain. The residents were driven on foot to Skaryszewski Square, where the transport was loaded onto a goods train. The people were allowed to take some things with them, and could pack between 07:00 and 10:00. The transport left at 13:00.
We didn’t know where they were taking us, there were rumours that the destination was Oświęcim concentration camp. However, we were sent to the transit camp in Pruszków, where we arrived at 17:00. Once everyone had been unloaded, we were segregated at gate XIV, at the camp entrance. Men were placed separately, with priests being added to this group; women and nuns were also placed separately, as were mothers with children and the elderly. The individual groups were taken to different barracks. I was taken together with the men to barrack 6, from where transports would leave for Germany, for labour, and for the concentration camps. Young women were led to barrack 4, while the elderly and women with children to barrack 1.
I know that other transports were herded into barrack 5 and then segregated. I don’t know which people from the administrative office performed this task. I only saw SS men while our transport was being segregated.
The Wehrmacht detachment at the camp was commanded by colonel Siebert, however I soon found out that the camp was governed by the SS, and so I always considered the commandant to be Diehl, a Sturmbannführer who was in charge of the SS unit stationed in the camp. If I remember correctly, the SS unit in the camp was subordinate to von dem Bach.
Apart from me, there were ten other priests and monks in barrack 6. On the day of our arrival at the camp in Pruszków, that is on 21 August 1944, a Sunday, the camp was inspected by the Bishop Szlagowski, who had been invited there by the Germans. The Germans wanted to show him that Poles had good conditions in the camp, and took the Bishop only to the women’s barrack, where the conditions were somewhat better. When the Bishop was passing barrack 6, the Germans wanted to lead him on, but the men in the barrack started shouting for him not to pass them by. At the same time the Bishop noticed me and the other priests, standing. He then stopped and the men told him that the Germans were separating families. The Bishop was being led by the camp’s SS commandant, Diehl, and that was the first time that I saw him. He was a tall man, some 175 cm, blonde, with a round, bloated face, fat, with a limp in one leg. Talking through an interpreter, the Bishop asked Diehl to free the priests from the camp and not to separate families before sending out transports; Diehl promised that he would free the priests and that families would not be separated. He kept his word only as regards the freeing of priests; families continued to be separated.
Diehl was at the camp only until the insurrectionists capitulated, i.e. 2 October. He then took command of a Räumungsstelle in Wola, which was engaged in the pillaging of Warsaw. I know that he was issuing passes to people who were to go to Warsaw. When Diehl was the commandant of the SS unit at the camp in Pruszków, all of the orders and regulations concerning the evictees came from the so-called green wagon, which housed his office. However, although instructions for sending transports of Poles to concentration camps came from that facility, I don’t know whether they were authored by Diehl, or whether he was acting on orders given by von dem Bach.
The day after the visit of the Bishop Szlagowski, the other priests and I were released from the camp. The Bishop asked me to remain in the camp, to bring spiritual solace to the evacuees. Therefore, Father Wiktor Bartkowiak (currently residing in Kraków, Jabłonowskich Street 28, flat 4) and I remained in the camp as chaplains. Diehl gave us passes allowing us to enter the camp, but we took up residence in Pruszków. Obviously, we didn’t receive any remuneration from the Germans. Thereafter we visited the camp nearly every day. From the [first] day of my appointment I proceeded to take care of the dying and kept a register of those who died at the camp. I noted down the first death on 3 September 1944. I hereby attach the register to the files so that it may be used appropriately, but after this is done I request that it be returned to me.
(The witness attached a notebook, in a new cover, to the files, this containing among other things a list of the dead).
I wrote the register myself, up to no. 43 inclusive, and saw the deceased persons. In each of the instances the death was confirmed by a doctor. From no. 43 onwards I wrote down deaths on the basis of excerpts from death certificates from the parish of Żbików by parish priest Dyżewski. The final two comments in my register concern the following: the first – those who died in the district hospital and in Tworki without giving their surnames. A register of the dead might probably be obtained from these hospitals. I did not note this down, for the registers are too in-depth. The dead are buried in Żbików cemetery and have also been recorded in the register of deaths of the parish of Żbików.
The second comment concerns those who died due to an accident that was related to me by Father Bartkowiak. In the beginning of September 1944, ten people – 7 women and 3 men – were massacred when they fell between railcar buffers. While Father Bartkowiak viewed the bodies himself, they were not identified. I don’t know where the bodies were buried, but I would assume that at Żbików cemetery.
As far as I know, the dead were not buried on the premises of the camp in Pruszków. Those who died were taken by the sanitary service to the barn near barrack 2, where they were anointed and prayers were said, their documents checked, and the deaths recorded. Next, a cart provided by the Main Welfare Council would take the bodies to Żbików cemetery. The cart drivers would change, for young people could regain their freedom by gaining employment at the camp. In each and every instance, the cart driver would collect the wartime identity cards (if these were available) of the deceased and their valuables, and hand over these items at the administrative office of Żbików parish, where the registrar would enter the deceased in the register of deaths. The wartime identity cards should still be located at the administrative office of Żbików parish. As far as I know, no registers of the deceased were kept before my arrival at the camp. The Main Welfare Council would send corpses to the cemetery without making any lists. Usually, each group of bodies was buried in a joint grave. Items left behind by the deceased, if any, were handed out to the poor. Before my arrival, as I heard, some of the dead were buried in Pruszków cemetery.
In the list, under numbers 29 and 41, are two instances of death due to being shot by the Germans. I don’t know the surnames of those who fired the shots. The people were shot because they were trying to escape.
When I arrived at the camp, barrack 2 was occupied by German doctors who approved the list of sick persons drawn up by Polish physicians; after the lists were approved once more, this time in the "green wagon", the persons in question would be sent to local hospitals. Usually, the list of sick persons would be taken to the "green wagon" by sister Alicja, an Ursuline nun; I don’t know her surname or her present address. It was later said that she resigned from the Order. Sister Alicja knew German very well.
A part of barrack 2 was set aside for tuberculosis patients and provided with bunk beds. The hygienic conditions there were terrible. Barrack 8 housed an observation point for infectious patients. This hospital of sorts was headed by a Russian prisoner of war, a colonel, I don’t remember his surname. It was fitted with plank beds, but the patients had nothing to cover themselves with. My register will indicate that the elderly constituted the majority of persons who died at the camp. The hospitals to which infectious patients were sent could provide information as to the number of people who died from epidemics. Sometimes, however, infectious patients were attached to transports of healthy persons, with the sick dying along the way. Dysentery was the most frequent infectious disease.
I don’t remember the date, it was in September 1944; while I was waiting for someone to sign a few sick notes in the "green wagon", I overheard a telephone call. One of the SS men said over the phone, in German: "to Oświęcim, two thousand". On this basis I would surmise that transport lists were drawn up in the "green wagon"; with all certainty, no lists were drawn up using names and surnames, only numbers. The Germans managed to remove all of the documents from Pruszków before the Red Army entered in 1945. The personal secretary of the commander of the camp’s SS unit could provide a wealth of information. I don’t know her surname, nor her nationality.
Transports sent to the Reich were directed to the concentration camps. Young girls from our transport from Skaryszewska Street were directed to the camp in Mauthausen, from where they were sent to work on farms. While in the camp I heard that more than 60 thousand Varsovians from the Old Town passed through the camp, while Diehl was expecting 200 thousand people from Śródmieście. Prisoners of war – insurrectionists – were present at the camp in two groups: Mokotów in the middle of September, and Żoliborz in the second half of September. Prisoners of war from other districts, and in particular Śródmieście, were kept in the camp in Ożarów, purportedly numbering 12 thousand. In Pruszków, they were kept in barrack 7, from where they would be transported to Skierniewice and then to camps in the Reich. While A. Korcz – a prisoner of war – was in the camp, the combatants were locked down in barrack 7, which was heavily guarded. Even I was not allowed to go there. When the Bishop Szlagowski came to say goodbye to them, the Germans sped up the transport, thus making it impossible for the Bishop to meet with the prisoners of war.
As an attachment, I would like submit a book in which I recorded those who perished at the camp. The entries may be somewhat incomplete.
