JANINA MAKOWSKA

Warsaw, 10 February 1946.

To the Main Commission for the Investigation
of German Crimes

I experienced that mass execution in Theatre Square. It was a horrible day! At 9 or 9:30 a.m., the wretched victims arrived at Theatre Square in vehicles. There was a terrifying sound signal before the execution, after which there was a volley of machine gun fire. We were speechless with silent despair since it could befall every Pole. There was a momentary deathly silence, then a silent collective prayer for the souls of the wretched victims of the German slaughter.

There were two friends of mine, Henryk and Albin, the Tucholski brothers, who were executed there after having been arrested during a round-up.
